TV at last!!

Finally got the lighting/background/shadows sorted on my little television. Just need to insert a camera and animate it, and it's ready to be put into after effects :)
I'm actually quite pleased with it and I think the shadow is the right shade and looks pretty good.

Footage Stills

I'm having problems with my hard drive and so have to post stills of my footage for now.

These are for Kindness:

These are for Temperance:

This is all raw footage, and has yet to be edited. There are some problems with my Chastity footage, but a bit of playing around will have that sorted in no time.

Storyboards and a typical floor plan for shooting

Here are the storyboards for Charity:

Floor Plan:

Budget

This is the budget I have given myself if I were to make the video fit for exhibition in the Tate Modern gallery.

I have also included a contingency of 10% for any extra costs that could arise.

Audience

I want this piece to be screened in the Tate Modern gallery in London, as it would be viewed by thousands while on display. Currently, work by Harun Farocki is being screened at the Tate Modern. I have visited this gallery myself, and as a non-gallery fan, I really enjoyed it and I think that a lot of people not interested in art go to the Tate Modern, as it is more of an installation gallery.

Visitors to the Tate Modern range from school age to the elderly, and therefore the video needs to be suitable for all ages. I have bared this in mind while deciding what each virtue will show.

I want the audience to learn from their experience while watching the video. I want them to see how they can react to situations they find themselves in daily, such as needing patience. I want them to come away with more than just a vague memory of the video, I want them to be affected by it, to remember it and to think of it when they are not sure what to do.

The installation itself will comprise of the video being shown on a diagonal screen and beanbags and chairs for people to sit on. Chairs will be mainly used for the elderly and disabled, as I want them to enjoy the video as much as any able bodied person could, and experience it as it is meant to be experienced, which is sat down and relaxed.

Where to screen it?

I want to screen the Virtues at the Tate Modern in London, because I find the gallery stimulating and highly enjoyable to visit.

I am going to be shooting on Mini DV and exporting in Quicktime, but the Tate Modern only has facilities for 16mm and 35mm film, therefore I will have to have my final piece put onto film, which at the moment would cost approximately £630. This seems a fair price to be able to have my work exhibited at the Tate Modern.

I will post sketches of how the exhibition will be laid out tomorrow with my audience profile.

I also finally have a tape! Arrived Friday of all days! Filming will commence next week!

Videos videos videos!

I have found some really nice (and some not so) videos about on the internet. Most are on YouTube, with people showing off their work and I'm using what they have done and the comments others have given the videos to help me decide on things like whether I want my final piece to be black and white, blacka nd white with specific colours or full colour. Oh the choices!!

I very much like this video, I like the style and the shapes and colouring the person has used in it.

--------------------------------------------------

Wow I love this video!!! It's just really consistant with an interesting narrative.

---------------------------------------------

Not so sure of this one, but the reason I put it up here is because of how the music dramatizes the video and makes it so much better than it would be without it.

-------------------------------------------------------

I like this video, you can really tell there has been a lot of work put into it.

------------------------------------------

I'm really inspired after watching hundreds of videos and images of other people's work, and now I'm going to attempt again to storyboard...

Still no video tape either, so I'm going to draw floor plans ready for when it gets here and I can at last get some test shots done to play with.

Bye for now :)

Seven Heavenly Virtues

Nowt like changing your mind week-by-week, eh?

I have decided to do the opposites of the sins. I decided this because most people have heard of the deadly sins, but a lot of people are unaware of the existence of the seven heavenly virtues and I want to make an educational video and I thought that this would be better.

The seven heavenly virtues are:

  • Chastity - Abstaining from sexual conduct
  • Temperance - Constant mindfulness of others and ones surrounding. Avoiding excess in things
  • Charity - Willingness to give
  • Diligence - Decisive work ethic
  • Patience - Forbearance, resolving conflicts patiently, ability to forgive
  • Kindness - Empathy without prejudice for its own sake
  • Humility - Selflessness and the giving of respect
Also, the postal strike could not have come at a worse time! I was due to do some test shots this week, but the tape and stuff I have ordered are a long way off being delivered! So by the looks of it, test shots are out this week.

I'm trying to draw storyboards, but I am terrible at drawing and it's really not happening right now.

I'm now off back to the drawing board - quite literally.

Seven Deadly Sins

So far, I have been thinking about what kinds of videos I want in the project.

I have done some research into the seven deadly sins, but I can't print it because my printer has decided to die on me! So everything is currently computerised which does make it a lot easier to organise.

I am going to put up some posters to advertise for some actors to appear in my project, but first I need to have a completed list of what is happening in each scene.

I'm going to start my storyboards this week, and get as much of the paperwork done over reading week so that I don't have to worry about it so much.

Change of plan!

Mr Penguin is going to have to wait.

I have now decided that I want to do an experimental video on the Seven Deadly Sins.

I have had a look at work done by others on After Effects on YouTube, and found some really nice videos -

Reel After Effects

Motion Graphics

After Effects Reel

I really like this person's work -

Jesse Richards

I'm going to film some scenes to represent the seven deadly sins and import them into Final Cut Pro and edit them into seven mini films, and then create an experimental video from them in After Effects using the same techniques that I have seen in the videos above.

Where to set it?

I created a poll for people to help me decide where to set my animation, but so far only one person has voted. I'm going to give it a few more days then decide myself where I should set it.

The penguin is a bit of a pain to make right now, I'm starting to think 3D is not the best idea! So far I have a grey blob that doesn't resemble anything, let alone a penguin!

Penguin!

I have decided there are not enough penguins in the digital world, and so I am going to re-populate it with a 3D animation of a penguin.

I did want to have a morph-like man in my animation, but I think having a penguin will make it look cuter.

I found this on YouTube, it's brilliant!
Do penguins fly?

I have had a little look at Pixar, and I want my animation to be in the style of their animated shorts, which tend to be about 5 minutes long.

I found this Pixar short which I first saw a few years ago at the start of a Pixar film, and I love the comedy behind it.

For the Birds...
